THE CASE FOR LEADERSHIP
Helping Great Programs Grow
You can count on us.
Artmaking is an investment in the experience your organization delivers. Arts in health programming supports patient experience, staff wellbeing, and family engagement — the human moments that families remember and experience surveys reflect.
It's also easier to fund than many organizations expect. Art kits become a sustainable part of your programming and are commonly supported through patient experience budgets, foundation or auxiliary sponsorship, employee wellbeing initiatives, and gift shop retail.
Our kits and workshops are turnkey for your staff, so the true cost is listed on the invoice, not hidden in weeks of staff preparation behind the scenes. Our goal is to help you build a reliable, efficient, and scalable program that is easier to implement operationally, and just as meaningful for the people it serves.

"Engaging in the arts improves the functioning of every major organ system in the body"
Dr. Daisy Fancourt, Art Cure, 2026
science with soul
What does the research say about artmaking, health, and connection?
THE PROOF IS IN THE RESEARCH
Active artmaking produces a measurable physical response, one that shows up in the body within minutes, not weeks. And that response is not an isolated finding. It sits inside a much larger body of research connecting arts engagement to quality of health across a person's life, from stress in the moment to how the body ages over decades.
In a Drexel University study, 75% of adults showed a measurable drop in cortisol, the body's primary stress hormone, after just 45 minutes of making art, regardless of prior experience. The finding lines up with a much larger picture. In a 2019 review, The World Health Organization's synthesized more than 3,000 studies and found a measurable role for the arts across the lifespan. And the evidence keeps building: a 2026 UCL study linked regular arts engagement to a slower pace of biological aging, comparable to physical activity, with the strongest effect in adults over 40.

Working Alongside Creative Arts Therapists
WE MAKE A GREAT TEAM.
Art therapy and arts-in-health serve different roles, and that's exactly what makes us such strong partners. While art therapy is a regulated clinical profession led by credentialed therapists, our role is arts-in-health: creating approachable artmaking experiences so more people can enjoy the benefits of making art.
At The Ugly Art Studio, we love working with creative arts therapists. We prepare, package, and deliver ready-to-use art kits, so they can dedicate more time to leading the important clinical work. Each art kit arrives with quality art supplies and guided activities, reducing the burden of sourcing and prepping materials.
In short: Art therapists bring the clinical expertise, we make sure they have art supplies ready at their fingertips.

FAQs
You've got questions, we've got answers.
What is arts in healthcare programming?
Arts in healthcare programming integrates creative, process-focused artmaking into healthcare experiences to support patients, caregivers, and staff, wherever care happens, not only within a single institution's walls. It spans hospitals, senior living, hospice, and other care settings, delivered through facilitated workshops or self-guided kits. The focus is always the experience of making, not artistic skill or a finished piece.
Is this art therapy?
No. Art therapy is a regulated clinical practice delivered by credentialed art therapists, and we don't provide it. Our workshops and kits are arts in health programming: facilitated artmaking for wellbeing and connection. See how we work alongside credentialed therapists
Who facilitates the workshops?
It depends on the format. For onsite and remote workshops, one of our facilitators leads the session. For self-guided kits, your own team facilitates, using the structure and instructions we provide. Either way, it's facilitation, not instruction.
What settings do you serve?
We serve a range of healthcare and care settings, including assisted living, senior living, memory care, hospice and bereavement programs, PACE-style day programs, hospitals, and staff wellbeing events. Many of our senior living partners describe this as creative aging programming. If you don't see your setting listed, ask, most care environments are a good fit.
How much preparation does my team need to do?
No experience expected, and none required. Every workshop and kit is built around process over perfection, so participants engage at whatever level feels right for them. This works for lifelong crafters and people who haven't picked up a paintbrush since grade school, side by side.
How do we get pricing?
Pricing depends on format, kit tier, and group size, so we quote based on what you actually need rather than a flat rate. Tell us about your organization and your group through our inquiry form, and we'll follow up with a clear, itemized quote.
Do you carry liability insurance?
Yes, we carry liability insurance and can provide a certificate of insurance on request.
What's included in the art kits?
We provide everything you need for the art activity, including all required supplies, quality materials, step-by-step instructions, a curated music playlist, PLUS some of our kits even include self-care extras. All of this, packaged beautifully and ready to use.
Are the kits suitable for healthcare settings?
Yes, our kits are specially designed for healthcare settings, using non-toxic and safe materials, plus activities that are built for flexible participation, usable in a variety of care environments, and welcoming for all levels of ability.
